One of the club’s famous footballing lads, Albert McPherson, returned today almost 50 years after his last appearance. Albert was born less than 100 yards from Salford Lads’ Club in West Dixon Street. He joined the club in 1942 and was a regular until 1954 when he became a professional footballer, firstly with Bury and then Walsall.

Albert was one of a famous quartet of lads from 1951 that went on to become professional footballers. Eddie Colman with Manchester United, Steve Fleet with Manchester City and Brian Doyle with Stoke City were the other famous names. Albert played centre half in more than 350 appearances for Walsall often as club captain during a 10 year spell. His testimonial game included stars of the day like Johnny Haynes, Bobby Robson and Ron Flowers who all turned out to support this well admired sportsman.
