Great to see Warren Smith knighted in the New Year’s Honours list. Warren was instrumental in kick-starting our fundraising campaign in 2005 when he was chairman of LPC Living. He became chairman of the club in 2006 and has continued to support us. He is pictured here in 2009 by photographer Stephen Wright. Warren has been the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester since 2007.
The volunteer team at the club have been awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service 2016. Between them they have have contributed over 600 years volunteering. Club president Anthony Groves great, great gandson of one of the original founders commented “The Queens Award for Voluntary Service formally recognises the team’s contributions at the very highest level. Their phenomenal work has ensured that the original vision of James and William Groves lives on today as one of the most successful and oldest, charitable youth establishments in the world”
World lightweight WBO boxing Champion Terry Flanagan, and former European light heavyweight champion Jamie Moore visited the club last night to celebrate the award of a grant from WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff. The club used the award for new VIP Boxing Equipment. The champion boxers also touring the club and took part in the Tuesday night ABA training session.
Our under 16 five a side football team made history today by being the first team from the club to win the National Title. They won the final of the Boys and Girls Clubs against teams from Newcastle and Durham. Along with our under 12 team they represented Greater Manchester in todays finals. In previous years our under 16 teams have made it to the North West Finals, but this year they achieved the top spot. A great achievement lads, well done.
After the under 12s won 2 weeks ago it was the turn of our under 16 footballers in last Saturdays BGCGM football competition at Soccer City in Trafford Park. They won all their games and now qualify for the national finals next year. The team are pictured with Anthony Rice ( centre ) and Club leader Leon Warmington far right.
Three club members took part in the National Pool Finals in Leicester last weekend organised by the Boys and Girls Clubs.
After reaching the semi-finals in previous years William Doyle has now added the national title at under 16 level; while Kyle Kearsley and Daniel Rice both reached the semi-finals in the under 12 competition. Well done lads.
The kidzwidreams club had a couple of special events this week, before the summer holidays. Parents came along to see their children awarded prizes and certificates. The club starts again in the autumn after the school holidays.
A group of young footballers, along with their proud parents and family, came into the club for the first time this week for an end of season presentation. Ordsall Juniors Under 10s managed by Paul Houghton have completed their very first season in the City of Salford Soccer League. We hope they will be back next year when they are old enough to join the club!
William Doyle (L) and Billy Quincey (R) took the under 14 Greater Manchester snooker titles at Stockport Lads Club last week . This was William’s seventh title in 3 years as winner of both snooker and pool events in greater Manchester and the North West . He reached the national semi finals 2 years ago. The event was organised by BGCGM.
Salford Lads’ Club members Jake Heard and William Doyle won two of the four CYP Greater Manchester pool finals. Jake won the under 16 final in a tense, best out of 3 games. William won his 3rd CYP Greater Manchester title in the under 14 competition, both will go forward to the North West finals at Preston in 2013
