A group from the Lads Club visited Challenge 4 Change in Trafford Park this week. They had a great time, its quite a challenge to negociate the high level walkways suported on a slender harness, but we had plenty of dare devils willing to give it a go.
Jay and James (pictured Right and left middle row) are our new sports coaches, from the Salford Red Devils Foundation. Tonight they brought along their under 16 rugby league team to try a spot of boxing with lads club coaches Dave Connell and Kevin McCloskey.
During November we have been taking part in a pilot crowdfunding project with Comic Relief. The aim is to try out new forms of fundraising. Along with 15 other organisations supported by the Comic Relief Core Strength programme we have put together a campaign based around our amazing volunteer team. The campaign runs until 29th November.
80 students from Salford were in the club today as part of the Salford Foundation NCS programme. “Making good Citizens” is what we are all about, so its good to have a new group of 16 and 17 year olds from across Salford sharing in positive activities. They are taking part in a week long programme which includes a residential and workshops and visits, today it was about fitness and a motivational talk about choosing the right path. Tomorrow its the turn of 80 students from Trafford.
It may have been pouring with rain on Wednesday night this week but the club was packed for football and junior boxing . Our under 14 footballers are playing in the Bury League this year, but we also have a new group of under 11s and they took part in a 5 a side tournament with lads from Barr Hill JFC.
Well done, to club members Justin and Chad (pictured left) who took part in the National table Tennis finals of the Boys & Girls Clubs which was held in Lincoln during the summer. The level of skill was extremely high but both lads made it to the quarter finals, which is a great achievement. Table tennis is once again popular at the club and we hold the Greater Manchester Boys & Girls Club competitions here each year.
Lloyd Butler (left) and Lennon Lee who won the Greater Manchester under 12 pool finals, reached the National semi -finals of the Boys and Girls Clubs pool competition held in Newcastle Under Lyme recently. Having progressed to the last 8 out of a field of over 50 they came up against each other, with Lloyd going through to the semi- final.
We have been holding dance workshops as part of Dance Manchester’s STRIDE dance project. Professional dancers from Company Chameleon, have been working with our junior boxers and junior footballers The workshops have involving, exercise, movement and music. Thanks to Salix Homes for supporting these sessions at the club.
The club played host to group of lads from Duncanrig Secondary School from East Kilbride, Scotland. The club was packed and they joined our lads for games of five a side, boxing, table tennis, pool and a tour of the club. The evening was rounded off with hot dogs and chips.
World lightweight WBO boxing Champion Terry Flanagan, and former European light heavyweight champion Jamie Moore visited the club last night to celebrate the award of a grant from WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff. The club used the award for new VIP Boxing Equipment. The champion boxers also touring the club and took part in the Tuesday night ABA training session.
