White Collar Boxing for SLC and St Ann’s Hospice

Boxing coaches Russ Arrowsmith and Dave Connell have organised a 4th fight night at the Willows Variety Club in Salford.  It’s next Friday 16th July  with all proceeds going to Salford Lads’ Club and St Ann’s Hospice.White collar boxing event 2010
For the past 6 months the novice boxers have worked along side ex professionals to reach a stage where they can take part in the ring. You might recognise a couple of  local lads, both Dayle and Chris featured on the poster have been involved with the club for many years.

Black Belt and First Aid

Black Belt - First Aid

3 members of the Cobra kickboxing Club have reached brown and black belt levels recently. Laura Ellis 1st Dan Black Belt, Cathy Morris, brown belt and Lee Morgan 3rd Dan Black Belt.
9 young club members and adult volunteers have taken part in a national first aid training course at the club over the past 2 weeks.

Archie meets his hero

Archie and Charlie Pawsey, Charlie Pawsey  in 1952

Salford Lad and  rugby league star Charlie Pawsey returned to the club yesterday . Charlie was captain of Leigh RLFC, an England star and also captained the Great Britain team on the tour of Australia in 1950.

Archie, a life long fan of the game recalled Charlie’s exploits on the pitch for Leigh, England and Great Britain  Charlie was also at Manchester United before WW2 but switched to Rugby League after the war. His SLC membership record shows he attended the 1937 camp, played netball for the club and his first job was as a cabin boy. Charlie spent his working life on the docks becoming a stevedore.

Owen Hargreaves and Kickz at Salford Lads’ Club

Young film makers

Music and sports stars helped launch the Man United Foundation Kickz project at the club recently. Cult band Kid British , Legendary local boy Peter Hook and Manchester United’s Owen Hargreaves came along to meet  young people  involved in the 8 week project.

The event was captured by Stephen Wright  and sports writer Henry Winter for the Daily Telegraph.

The picture shows a group of young people and project workers Lee, Roy and Sheila filming outside the club last month as part of the Kickz project.

The sport usually taking place here is table tennis, but this week Liverpool based Smiths tribute band,The Smiths Indeed launched their 25th anniversary “Meat is Murder” tour “ The event was filmed for the BBC North West Tonight programme.

Greater Manchester Snooker champs

Club members travelled to Stockport Lads’ Club this week to take part  dylan and barryin the Greater

Manchester Federation under 14 Snooker Competition.  We came away with both winner

and runner up prizes. Dylan Whitehead (left)  and Barry Britton (right) will now go through

as regional winners to the Northern Final later in the season.
